Empowering Innovative Talents of Translation with Digital Intelligence Technology
Welcome the Successful Holding of 2023 Forum on Translation Technology and Language Service Talents Training
2023 Forum on Translation Technology and Language Service Talents Training was held in Shanghai Institute of Technology on December 2nd and 3rd. This forum convenes a global and diverse community of experts from well-known universities and leading enterprises, such as the National University of Electro-Communications (UEC Tokyo), University of Macao, Fudan University, Tongji University, Dalian International Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Shandong Normal University, RWS, and Shanghai Tmxmall Information Technology Co., Ltd., focusing on “technology serving innovation”, “language service positioning”, “automatic content generation”, “LLM model for talents training” and “digital intelligence for translation teaching reform”. After exploring innovation and development of translation education, all the participants have jointly contributed their wisdom to training of language service talents.
The forum was held at an important stage when General Secretary Xi Jinping visited Shanghai at the end of November, emphasizing scientific and technological innovation at a high level of national strategy, which made this forum quite meaningful. Wang Xiaofan, President of Shanghai Institute of Technology, stated that “application-oriented education and technology serving innovation” has already been a new trend for universities to respond to a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial changes, among which AI is a highlighted revolution. Technology can empower foreign language research and teaching. It turns out as a new direction of innovation and development of foreign language studies as a discipline. In the era of digital intelligence, Shanghai Institute of Technology should cultivate high-end language talents and application-oriented translation talents with the help of generative artificial intelligence to serve digital China and our intelligent society. The whole world will listen to the voice of China and catch a harmonious image of China with numerous outstanding translators and language service talents spreading out information of contemporary China.
As pointed out by Huang Youyi, Executive Vice President of Translators Association of China and former Deputy Director of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, translation as an international communication capability should serve international communication of China. He highlighted two golden keys for international communication of Chinese culture, that is, translation technology and language service. While many countries in the west spread their cultures in colonization, China has made use of AI translation technology and the National Translation Team from Chinese into foreign languages to spread the Chinese culture to the whole world. Under the background of mutual learning and interaction among different civilizations in the world, we should exchange Chinese views, Chinese approaches and the Chinese modernization with other countries with these two golden keys.
