Professor Deng Yaochen, Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Languages and Their Teaching, a well-chosen periodical on the list of Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) for foreign languages, was invited as a guest speaker to share key points for due attention in writing a paper for publishing at the conference room of B309 on November 17th. Yang Xue, secretary of the General Party Branch of SFL, was present for the whole lecture. And the lecture was presided over by Ye Xiang, director of the Translation Center. Over 20 teachers participated in this event, making an active exchange and interaction on paper writing with the speaker.

First of all, Professor Deng Yaochen pointed out differences in assessing a paper as an editor and in writing it out as an author. A paper is rejected by a journal mainly due to the following five reasons from a perspective of an editor. The theme in the paper is outdated and it is not academic question-centered in writing. There are few focal points in literature review, so an academic question can not be highlighted. There are many inappropriate expressions in Chinese and English abstracts, keywords and references, so the paper is not reader-friendly at all. There are flaws in the research design and a fuzzy description on methodology. The discussion part is not closely related to literature review. And there are few innovative views in results. What’s more, Professor Deng gave specific instructions on academic writing.

In a word, it is a rare chance for foreign language teachers of SIT to sit together with the editor-in-chief of a renowned journal in the foreign language field, sharing views on academic writing and publication of papers. Such a significant event has been highly praised by all the attendees of the sixth lecture of SIT Forum.
